A Guide to Castell de Castells

Castell de Castells is located directly west of the Val de Pop in the southwest of the Marina Alta, it is a village completely surrounded by mountains, including La Xortà that is over 1,000 metres tall.

There are various hiking routes and winding roads great for cycling or driving making it a great place to explore the natural beauty and cave paintings, amongst other sites of historical interest, that the region is known for.

There are various popular bars and restaurants, whether you are after homemade traditional Valencian dishes or want to cool off in the summer with a refreshing drink and some tapas.

Fiestas

In January, Castell de Castells celebrates Sant Antoni with a barbecue and a bonfire.

On the last weekend of April, they host a festival dedicated to the folklore and gastronomy of the region.

Their patron, Saint Anna, is celebrated with festivities on the 25th and 26th of July, and further patron saint festivities occur from the 15th to the 18th of August.

On the 7th and 8th of September, they celebrate an ancient tradition in the Plà de Petracos, related to the end of the almond harvest.

Hiking

The GR-330 is a route of 20 stages that explores the interior of the Costa Blanca between Dénia and Orihuela. The third stage, which begins in Parcent and finishes in Castell de Castells, is ranked as a difficult trek at approximately 22.5km long.

For a shorter option, the 14km route from Benigembla to Castell de Castells, the PR-CV 427, that takes you via the peak of Cocoll.

Leisure

A little way south of the village is a recreationary area, El Castellet, which includes a playground ideal for taking the children.

The Museum of Ethnology, open from Friday to Sunday, not only includes a collection of items exploring the traditions of the interior of Alicante but also a room dedicated to the 8,000-year-old history of the World Heritage Site, the Sanctuary of Pla de Petracos.

The Surrounding Area

Vall de Pop

Being one of the most interior parts of the Marina Alta, the closest neighbours are in the area known as the Vall de Pop, ideal for nature lovers, cyclists, and hikers with plenty of routes to explore with stunning views of the Marina Alta. For artists, Benigembla hosts a competition of street art every year, while in Alcalalí there is a Photography Marathon as part of the celebrations of Fesalí.

Orba

Of all the towns and villages in the Marina Alta nearby, Orba is one of the larger ones and a great place to learn more about the history of the Marina Alta, whether at the Museu del Fang or the Castellet.

Benimaurell

For those that like hiking, a trip to Benimaurell, one of the towns that make up the Vall de Laguar, offers a short journey nearby to the Catedral de Senderismo, a site of historical interest popular with hikers. On the way, you will pass La Venta del Collao, a restaurant that overlooks the valley, where you can pair your dishes with local wines and great views.
