A Guide to Benigembla

Benigembla is a small mountain village in the Marina Alta, located in the Vall de Pop along the River Gorgos. Surrounded by beautiful, mountainous landscapes, including the Alts de Cocoll, where you can find some of the highest peaks of the Marina Alta.

What to do in Benigembla

Fiestas

Benigembla celebrates several religious and traditional fiestas throughout the year.

On the 16th and 17th of January the town celebrates San Honorato and San Antonio, with traditional festivities and the blessing of animals.

The patronal festivities take place in mid-August, usually between the 12th and 17th, honouring San José, San Agustín, San Francisco Javier and the Assumption of the Virgin. During these days the town hosts concerts, religious events, community meals and various celebrations in the streets.

Hiking

The mountainous landscape surrounding Benigembla makes it a great starting point for hiking routes that explore the interior of the Marina Alta.

Benigembla to Castell de Castells

This challenging route takes hikers through the Cocoll mountain range, reaching elevations of over 1,000 metres above sea level. Along the way you can enjoy the stunning views across the inland valleys of the Marina Alta.

The FEMECV registry notes that quality control checks for this route may not have been updated recently, so it is advisable to prepare accordingly before setting out.

Sender del Badall (PR-CV 465)

The Sender del Badall explores the landscape to the south of Benigembla and the eastern slopes of the Cocoll mountains. The trail also includes two possible variants.

According to the FEMECV trail registry, the route currently meets the organisation’s quality standards.

What to see in Benigembla

Mostra d'Art Urbà

The Mostra d'Art Urbà is one of Benigembla’s most creative cultural initiatives. Since 2017 the town has invited artists to submit mural proposals making the town itself the canvas.

Each year residents volunteer the façades of their homes as canvases, often suggesting the kind of scenes or themes they would like to see painted.

Benigembla has a small selection of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy traditional cuisine from the Vall de Pop and the Marina Alta.

The Surrounding Area

Castell de Castells

Castell de Castells is surrounded by mountains, including La Xortà with a peak of 1,088 metres. The region is home to prehistoric rock art sites such as the Pla de Petracos.
