A Guide to Benimaurell
Benimaurell, also known as Poble de Dalt (Upper Village), sits high up in the mountains of the Vall de Laguar with incredible views of the Marina Alta.
The mountainous terrain has made the area a popular destination for hikers and cyclists, with some of the Marina Alta's best-known routes passing nearby.
Also part of the Vall de Laguar are the nearby villages of Campell and Fleix.
What to do in Benimaurell
Fiestas
Saint Anthony
Celebrations begin on the evening of 16th January with a traditional bonfire, community meal and street festivities.
The following day, residents celebrate with Mass and a procession in honour of Saint Anthony before gathering again for an evening meal.
The festivities conclude on 18th January with the traditional blessing of the animals and a communal paella in the village square.
Patronal Festivities
Benimaurell celebrates its patronal festivities from 22nd to 24th August in honour of San Roque, San Cosme, San Damián and San Miguel.
Hiking
Catedral de Senderismo
One of the Marina Alta's best-known hiking routes passes through Benimaurell as part of the Vall de Laguar's famous Catedral del Senderismo.
The circular route of more than 13km including more than 6,000 steps carved into the mountainside.
According to the official FEMECV trail registry, the route currently matains the necessary quality controls.
Les Valls - De-registered
Although information about the Les Valls route is still available online, it's important to note that the FEMECV has de-registered the trail, so walkers should check local information before attempting it.
What to see in Benimaurell
Pla Petracos Sanctuary
Although located in Castell de Castells, a short drive from Benimaurell is the Pla de Petracos Sanctuary, home to some of the most important prehistoric rock art in the Valencian Community.
The site was included in UNESCO's Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin World Heritage designation in 1998.
