Pego is situated in the north of the Marina Alta surrounded by mountains and marshes, and less than 15 minutes from the beach, making it an ideal town for outdoor lovers and beach goers.

In the past Pego has formed part of La Vuelta and the Gandia Rally.

Within the town itself you can still see some of the remains of the the walls and 16 towers that once enclosed the city, most of which were destroyed during the war of succession. Today only one of the three gates remains, the Port de Sala.

What to do in Pego

Castell d'Ambra

Located in the Sierra de Midgia to the south of Pego is the Castell d'Ambra, constructed in the 13th century. The walk up to this castle offers incredible views of the Marina Alta and the Mediterranean Sea.

Fiestas

La Bajada Del Rio Bullent

On the Saturday before Carnestoltes, the Carnaval of Pego, residents float down the Bullent River in homemade boats.

Las Fallas

Las Fallas is a festival celebrated across many towns in the Valencian Community, and Pego is no exception. The celebration features traditional clothing, fireworks, and the symbolic burning of large papier-mâché statues known as “fallas.”

Carnaval

Pego's Carnaval is celebrated on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday and is known as one of the most extravagant in the region. Its popularity has reportedly caused the population to swell to five times its usual size on occasion.

Patronal Festivities & Moros y Cristianos

The Patron Saint of Pego, El Santísimo Ecce-Homo, is honoured at the end of June during the same period as the Moors and Christians festival. Celebrations include re-enactments, parades, dances, and floats, while the town takes on the theme of a medieval village with decorations and markets.

Hiking

Serra de Mostalla

From Pego, you can follow a scenic hiking route north around the Mostalla mountain range, crossing the Mostalla and l’Horta ravines. Currently the route is not listed on the FEMECV site, so be sure to check with local groups or the tourist office before setting off.

Natural Park Wetlands

Nearby is the Parc Natural de la Marjal, known for its rich biodiversity. It’s a great destination for hikers and birdwatchers looking to explore one of the most ecologically important wetlands in the region.

Museums of Pego

In the Casa de Cultura on Carrer Sant Domènec, you’ll find Pego's two museums, the museum of contemporary art and the museum of ethnology.

Museums of Contemporary Art

The museum of contemporary art opened in 1991 with six rooms dedicated to different works. Many of the prize winners of the Vila de Pego contest are now here, but it also contains donations from other artists and galleries. There are six dedicated rooms showcasing modern Spanish art.

Museums of Ethnology

The museum of ethnology demonstrates Pego's agricultural history particularly in regards to the rice and orange cultivation. Tools, old photographs, and recreated scenes give insight into rural life in earlier decades.

Vila de Pego Painting Contest

Since 1976, Pego has hosted the National Vila de Pego Painting Contest. The competition, named in honour of José Mª Pascual after he was granted the title “Hijo Predilecto,”, becoming a popular event on the cultural calendar

Where to Eat in Pego

You’ll find a great selection of restaurants in Pego, popular with both locals and visitors, with plenty of options to enjoy traditional Valencian dishes or cuisine from other parts of the world. A few well-known examples include:

  • Rafel de Pego offers Spanish cuisine specialising in traditional Valencian Paella.
  • Argho's is a modern burger restaurant who's founder worked in Michelin starred restaurants.
  • Buddha Eyes Tandoori serves authentic Indian and Nepali cuisine.

Towns Close to Pego

El Verger

El Verger is a residential town to the southeast of Pego. It's in a great location close to various beaches, the wetlands of Pego, Dénia and commercial shopping centre in Ondara.
