What to do in Benidoleig
La Cueva de las Calaveras
La Cueva de las Calaveras is a cave system extending 900 metres underground, 500 of which are submerged in water. It gets its name from a 17th-century expedition that discovered the remains of 12 individuals inside.
Though these remains most likely belonged to Muslim farmers from the medieval period, the find fuelled the local legend of the Moorish king Ahlí Moho, who was said to have fled from El Cid with his treasure and a harem of 150 women.
Discoveries of other artefacts suggest the cave was also inhabited by early Homo sapiens and Neanderthals.
You can book tickets through the official website.
