A Guide to Javea's Beaches

18 03 - 2024

beaches-of-javea.pngJavea is one of the main coastal towns in Marina Alta, with plenty of bars, clubs Michelin Star Restaurants and sites for cultural and historical interest, such as Museo Arqueológico y Etnográfico Soler Blasco, it is also home to some great beaches.

  • Arenal
  • Granadella
  • Primer Muntanyar
  • Segon Muntanyar

Arenal

The Arenal has a lot to offer; Javea’s largest sandy beach is also the most popular and for good reason. It measures 480 metres long and also in the past has received the blue flag status for the quality of its waters.

It lost the flag in 2023 due to some repair works that took place but will reportedly try to obtain the blue flag status again in 2024.

The beach itself includes play areas for children and offers enough watersports that would require an article in itself to cover. Frequently visited by paddle boarders and kite surfers alike, visitors can also rent jet skis and inflatables.

In the summer it is recommended that you arrive early to get a spot, and make sure you wear flip-flops as in the summer you could probably fry an egg on the sand in the afternoon sun (we haven’t tested this theory, for obvious reasons).

The promonade has a wide variety of cafés, bars and restaurants offering a range of good food and drinks. From ice cream to pastries, pizza to sushi or Guinness to cocktails there is something for everybody.

Granadella

La Granadella is 160 metres of sand situated in the south-west of Javea and was awarded the blue flag status in 2023.

A great spot to do some snorkelling thanks to the crystal clear waters. You can also hire kayaks and visit some of the caves that are located nearby.

But if you prefer to surf or windsurf the Arenal or Primer Muntanyar are much more appropriate options.

Close to the beach there are also routes for senderism where you can hike to a couple of lookouts and even the ruins of the Granadella Castle, all of which offer great views of the Mediterranean.

An important point to remember! During the peak months of July and August, parking there is restricted. So make sure you to get up early if you want to visit la Granadella.

Primer Muntanyar

Also known as Benissero, it is almost 2km long, approximately 400 metres of gravel and 1.6 kilometres of rough stone, which in the past was extracted for construction material.

If you are an early bird, Primer Muntanyar is a great place to go to see “the Dawn of Spain” due to the beautiful sunrise that can be seen from this beach.

Here you also have Baños de la Reina. They are architectural remains whose name comes from the legend that they were an isolated place for a Moorish queen to bathe.

The coastal strip is a marine protected area and parking is restricted as a part of sustainability policy that is in place to preserve the beach.

For those interested in watersports, it is possible to hire kayaks and is suitable for paddle boarding. When the wind is right it’s a good beach for windsurfing.

Segon Muntanyar

Segon Muntanyar also goes by the name of Sequía de la Noria. It is 1.7km of rough and rocky coastline and, like Primer Muntanyar, was also used in the past to extract material for construction.

One of the features of Segon Muntanyar is a channel dug into the rocks, likely by the Romans, to enable water to flow into the salt flats.

Due to it’s rocky nature, it’s not ideal for watersports, but thanks to the calm waters it can be good for snorkelling.
